Christopher Gomez Explains How Trauma Forms Lies and How God Heals Them
In this video, Christopher Gomez explains how childhood wounds can form lies about ourselves, other people, and God. He walks through a personal example, shows how these beliefs can repeat through relationships, and leads a Christian inner healing meditation for viewers seeking truth, safety, and freedom in God the Father.
Unrepaired childhood wounds can produce false identities that affect reactions and relationships.
A spiritual lie can distort how someone views themselves, other people, and God.
Repentance, apology, and relational repair can interrupt destructive patterns before they spread.
Christian inner healing brings painful memories into prayer so God can reveal truth.
The guided meditation focuses on safety, gratitude, breathing, and the fatherly love of God.
All right. Praise God. Praise God forevermore.
Welcome to another episode of Disarming Lies of the Enemy. I am your host, Shrek’s younger and less attractive brother, Christopher Gomez.
I am excited to dive into today’s teaching, but before we do, let’s pray in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Lord God, I pray for everyone in the meeting, including Natasha, Leticia, and Nancy. Come into their lives, Lord.
You said that the kingdom of heaven continually advances. We pray that the abundance of heaven would flow into all our lives, including everyone watching the stream and everyone in this meeting.
God, we want to see the kingdom of heaven advance forcefully and reclaim the areas where the domain of darkness has moved forward on this earth.
We pray that the power of Jesus Christ would flow through each of us and into us. May we receive his love, mercy, and kindness. May we drink from the unending river of mercy that flows through the love of God in Christ Jesus.
Lord, do not let it stop there. Help us give that love and mercy away.
Luke 6:38 says that the more we give, the more we receive. We keep giving it away, knowing that you continue filling our cups until they overflow.
God, I pray that our cups would overflow. Thank you, Lord.
I especially thank you for helping me launch our new website. Kudos to Dan, Liy, and yours truly for the design work that helped us get it completed.
We have also added Christian, Angelica, and Laurens as new contractors who will support Jason, Dan, and Liy in the work we are doing.
Lord, I am already seeing an overflow through the doubling of the team working on this ministry. Praise your name, Lord Jesus Christ. We bless you for all the work you are doing through our ministry.
Thank you, Lord Jesus Christ. Thank you, Father God. Praise your name.
We have already completed the welcome and orientation. Before we continue, I want to reflect on Psalm 100:4, which tells us to enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise.
Does anyone have any thanksgiving or praise they would like to offer our heavenly Father for the work he is doing through Disarming Lies and for helping us grow in our identities as beloved children of the Most High God?
No worries. I can begin because this connects with the first thing I want to discuss, which is a personal testimony.
I shared part of this last week. Since then, I have had more time to sit with it, discern what was happening, and examine how this pattern was moving through my life.
Most of you know me as your bald brother in Christ. However, during my teenage years, I looked different. In the picture I am showing, I am on the left and my younger brother is on the right.
I had an angsty look and wore a tie. I also had the skater haircut that was parted down the middle. This was before I had a mullet, so it was not much better.
The trauma I want to share happened when I was somewhere between nine and eleven years old.
I remember being upset with my dad because he did not buy me something I wanted after hockey. I got into the car while my younger brother and his friend were sitting in the back.
In my frustration, I likely cursed at my dad while he was outside the car.
When my dad got into the car, my brother’s friend told him, “Mr. Gomez, Chris called you a bad name when you weren’t in the car.”
I was completely caught off guard and almost in shock.
In that moment, the lie I spoke over myself was, “I am a betrayer.”
I felt incredibly exposed. I had said something nasty behind someone’s back, and it was immediately brought into the light.
From what I remember, we never had an opportunity to have a heart-to-heart conversation about what happened. Because there was no repair conversation, the wound remained.
Over time, I noticed a pattern in my life. When I feel betrayed, I do not always respond with the patience, love, and kindness that St. Paul describes in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8.
That passage is often read at weddings, but instead of living it out, I have often given up on relationships rather than fighting for them.
This is a dysfunction in my life that God is now bringing to the surface.
I would love to tell you that I have everything figured out, but I do not. I am sharing this wound from my past so we can begin unpacking it together.
This is also a testimony because the memory had been suppressed. It came to the surface during the meditation we did last week.
I have only been sitting with it for about a week. After sharing part of it and spending another week praying through it with God, I wanted to use it to explain how the enemy steals, kills, and destroys.
The first step is a traumatic experience.
In my example, my brother’s friend brought into the light something I had said in darkness. There was no repair conversation afterward, so the wound festered.
I judged the situation as bad because of how I had been exposed.
I felt publicly shamed in front of my brother, my father, and my brother’s friend. I had spoken negatively about someone behind his back, and suddenly everyone knew.
After judging the situation, I experienced shame and guilt. I froze in the front seat and felt the horror of being instantly exposed.
At this point, the enemy can begin reinforcing the lie and preventing the wound from being healed.
I believe Satan and demons can work through different parts of this process. I am not saying they operate only at one specific stage.
However, if Satan is the father of lies, then the formation and reinforcement of a lie is an important place where demonic influence can work to keep a person wounded and prevent healing.
The resulting sin that came from believing I was a betrayer was that I sometimes betrayed people. I spoke negatively about them behind their backs and acted according to the identity I had accepted.
We begin coping with our pain through sin. We sin as a way of coping.
Then confirmation bias develops.
Lies are complex and work in three dimensions. They can affect how we view ourselves, how we view other people, and how we view God.
Think about it this way. If I believe I am a betrayer, I may begin believing that other people are betrayers too.
If I believe God made me to be a betrayer and created other people who betray me, I may eventually begin believing that God is also a betrayer.
That is the three-dimensional nature of a lie. It moves toward the self, other people, and God.
This creates what I think of as a death loop. Satan comes to steal, kill, and destroy our lives, as Jesus explains in John 10:10.
This process can create bondage and mental strongholds.
For example, one stronghold might be the belief that people are going to betray me.
That belief prevents me from mining the divine gold in people. Instead of seeing what is good in them, I begin pointing out their faults and limitations.
It also prepares the stage for a future betrayal that may never happen.
Because I believe I am a betrayer, other people are betrayers, and God is a betrayer, I expect people to hurt me. I start searching for their limitations and looking for evidence that confirms the lie.
Let me give you an example.
One of my sons was preparing for a bike ride on Saturday. Three of us were getting ready to go.
I was taking the bikes down from the racks in the garage. We have four children, so the bikes had been stored over the winter. It was finally becoming warm enough to ride bikes in Chicago.
I took the bikes down, put air in the tires, and completed the work needed to prepare them.
When I was ready to leave, my sons were scrambling around and not staying focused. I became frustrated and lashed out at one of them.
I said, “Why don’t you become an asset instead of being a liability?”
As I have discussed in the accountability group, I have been wearing a rubber band around my wrist.
Whenever I start finding faults instead of mining the gold in people’s hearts, I snap the rubber band. It reminds me to be encouraging, as St. Paul teaches.
My eleven-year-old son walked up to me and snapped the rubber band.
Thank you, Jesus.
He was essentially telling me, “Dad, you hurt my feelings.”
That gave me an opportunity to repent.
His dad had called him a liability and a burden on the family. A child could take that statement and form the belief, “I am a burden.”
That belief could expand into the idea that other people are burdens and that God is a burden.
This is where we can see the cycle beginning again.
Because his dad called him a liability, my son might have formed a traumatic memory. Without inner healing, relational repair, and repentance from me, that experience could have led him to judge himself.
He could have accepted the condemnation that he was a burden. He might then have believed that other people were burdens and that God was a burden.
He could have begun sinning through that wound and searching for proof that the lie was true.
That is why I repented, apologized, hugged him, and took steps to restore the relationship.
I do not want to magnify the domain of darkness. That is not the purpose of today’s discussion.
I am trying to help you understand how Satan and demons attempt to steal, kill, and destroy our lives. These patterns can become death loops that continue repeating.
That is the bad news.
The good news is that God can transform us as we renew our minds and accept the truth that we have the mind of Christ.
We can do all things through God, who strengthens us. Praise God.
To experience that transformation, we need to address the bondage and strongholds at their roots.
These roots include memories of trauma, the lies we spoke over ourselves, and the demonic influences we allowed to keep parts of ourselves in darkness instead of bringing them into the light.
Healing must reach those places. That is what we are going to do today.
I shared a lot of information. I realize we are discussing the domain of darkness, and I do not want to magnify it unnecessarily.
Before we begin the meditation, I want to make sure you have an opportunity to ask questions about this death loop and the enemy’s plans to steal, kill, and destroy our lives.
Natasha, what are you thinking? I see you writing notes, and I know you are diligent. What is coming to mind?
Natasha: It is a lot. Based on what happened today, I think it is applicable.
I could have regressed after seeing what happened with the vehicle. I could have judged the situation and asked, “Where is God? I said my prayers this morning, so what happened?”
This teaching is applicable. Thank you.
Christopher: No worries.
The same Holy Spirit who inspired Scripture is present now. He wants to bring light into the dark places and the traumatic experiences we have gone through.
When these traumas are healed, our lives can be transformed by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
I am going to guide us through a meditation. This will be the final part of today’s livestream.
After the livestream ends, please remain with me. At that point, only the As It Is in Heaven community members will remain, and we will be able to share the traumas the Lord may be bringing to the surface.
I will lead the meditation first. When it is finished, we can process what the Holy Spirit has brought to mind.
Natasha, can you guide me? Is the volume of the meditative music okay compared with my voice?
Natasha: Yes.
Christopher: Can you hear my voice clearly over the music?
Natasha: Yes, sir, I can.
Christopher: Okay. Let’s begin in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
God, we are deeply blessed to enter heaven through the blood of Jesus.
As we meditate, we do not remain only on earth. St. Paul teaches us in the New Testament that we are seated in heavenly places with Jesus Christ, who is beside God the Father.
Thank you, Lord.
We enter through the blood of Christ. As his blood washes over us, we become completely innocent through receiving our Lord and Savior and accepting what he did for us on the cross.
Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, Lord.
Now place yourself in the position of the baby shown here. See yourself being held by God the Father.
As you begin using your imagination to enter into a deeper union with God, start becoming aware of your senses.
What do you smell? What do you see?
The Father is holding us, but we are also holding him.
What do the Father’s shoulders feel like?
As you hold on to the Father, experience his strong paternal care and love.
Know that you are safe in your Father’s arms.
Thank you, God. Praise your name.
Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, Lord, for the safety you provide.
As we turn toward God, we thank him for everything he has given us.
These gifts might include our cars, spouses, children, houses, businesses, jobs, and careers.
We thank him for the internet, which allows us to connect from different parts of the world.
We thank him for food, coffee, pumpkin pie, and all the other things our heavenly Father has provided.
As we position our hearts in gratitude, the Father holds us even more closely.
Thank you, Lord.
Thank you for everything you have done for us, everything you continue to do, and everything you will do throughout our lives.
Thank you for all your blessings, Lord.
Thank you, Jesus.
As you look into the eyes of God, he says, “Take my hand. I want to journey with you.”
As you place your hand in his, you realize that you are completely safe.
Your hand fits perfectly within his hand because he is our Abba. He is our Daddy, and we are his children, whom he loves mightily.
He tells you that you are safe and protected. He wants to offer you the abundant life that Jesus describes in the Gospels.
First, however, there are wounds and resulting lies that you have experienced throughout your life.
Our heavenly Father is going to lead you through them.
Position your heart and say, “Jesus, Lord, I want to be healed of any traumas I have experienced that are separating me from living in perfect union with you.”
As we sit here in meditation, begin slowing down your breathing.
I like to inhale for four seconds, hold the breath for two seconds, and exhale for six seconds.
Place your feet on the ground and sit upright in your chair, allowing oxygen to flow through your body.
As you inhale, experience your stomach and diaphragm expanding like a balloon.
As you exhale, imagine the balloon contracting as the air is gently released.
Let’s begin.
Inhale for four seconds.
One, two, three, four.
Hold for two seconds.
One, two.
Exhale for six seconds.
One, two, three, four, five, six.
As we inhale again, we breathe in the breath of God.
One, two, three, four.
Hold for two seconds.
One, two.
Exhale for six seconds.
One, two, three, four, five, six.
As your breathing slows, allow God to take you on this journey.
Open yourself to any traumatic experiences you may have gone through where lies were formed and began stealing, killing, and destroying parts of your life.
Remember what we discussed about how the domain of darkness works.
I am going to stop speaking for a moment. Take this time to meditate, and I will join you in doing the same.
[Silent meditation]
As we return, gently rub your face. You can also move your toes or fingers to help yourself come out of the meditation slowly.
God, we thank you that accessing heaven is easy and simple.
You opened the way through your Son’s death on the cross. You tore the veil and opened the doorway for us to enter heaven and spend time with our heavenly Father.
Thank you, Lord.
The healing process begins when we return to traumatic memories, but this time, we enter them with God rather than facing them alone.
With God, we can view the trauma through a new lens and identify the lie that was formed.
We then disarm the lie through the inner healing process.
We invite Jesus to speak truth into the wounded place, and we integrate that truth into our lives.
This is the approach we will use to disarm these lies.
I am now going to stop sharing my screen and end the livestream. Give me one moment.
As a Catholic nonprofit, every dollar given is prayerfully used to build the Kingdom of God — on earth as it is in heaven. Through your generosity, we are able to continue proclaiming the Gospel, setting the captives free, and equipping the Body of Christ to walk in healing, deliverance, and true freedom. Your gift is not just a donation; it is an act of faith that multiplies into souls restored, families healed, and lives transformed by the power of Jesus Christ. We keep nothing for ourselves. All contributions go directly toward sustaining this ministry — providing the tools, technology, staff, and outreach necessary to reach more hearts with the mercy of God. Please prayerfully consider sowing into this mission. Together, we are answering Christ’s call to heal the brokenhearted, proclaim liberty to captives, and set free those who are oppressed.
